Recipe: liver treats

Liver Treats recipe
1 pound raw liver (chicken, beef, or lamb)
1 egg
1 tsp garlic
Oatmeal (old fashioned)

Puree (liquidize) raw liver, egg and garlic. Add enough oatmeal to the consistency of drop biscuits (like Bisquick mix). The amount of oatmeal will vary according to what kind of liver you use. Spread on greased (cooking spray is ok) jelly roll pan or cake pan to about 1/4 inch thick although I think ours were a little thicker than that. Bake at 360 degrees until the color is brown, not red. Ours took about 45 minutes but check it frequently as times may vary. I cut it up into small bite pieces before it was completely cooled. I spread the cut up pieces on a cookie sheet single layer and froze them. Once they were frozen I put them in a ziploc bag and keep in freezer. They thaw in just a few minutes and have the consistency of a chewy cookie. I have been able to carry them in my pocket without a mess. Bon Appetit!

Thanks Susan. Scooter goes crazy for liver treats! I have a liver treat recipe that uses cornmeal and wheat flour, but I think your recipe is healthier for the dogs because of the oatmeal.

A couple quick notes to other users: Remember to use old-fashioned oatmeal, not quick-cooking or instant oatmeal. You can carry them around in your pocket for hours at a time, but the treats have to be stored in the refrigerator or freezer because they don't keep at room temperature. The ones I made did go moldy in a couple of days at room temperature on the kitchen counter.
